Karate

  1. The class usually begins with a light, cardiovascular warm up and conditioning (push-ups, sit-ups and stretching).
  2. From there, depending on the level of the students, there may be a review of blocks, punches, and kicks.
  3. There then follows Kata (forms).
  4. And perhaps, for those qualified, controlled sparring (fighting). This is always done wearing protective equipment. The safety of the student is always our number one priority.
  5. There may then follow a cool down.

Come and observe a class. Or, even better, take one! And experience the joy of training.

Group Kata

Kobudō

Yamanni-ryu bojutsu is an ancient Okinawan staff-based martial art. It was popularized outside of Okinawa by Nishime- and Oshiro-sensei in the early 1990s, but it had had a great influence on the early development of martial arts in Okinawa.

Physical Conditioning

Goal: Build overall strength to help master proper martial arts movements by allowing the body to function as one unit, focusing on 5 key points of training:

  1. Upper body strength
  2. Lower body strength
  3. Core strength
  4. Flexibility
  5. Cardio and proper breathing

All training is low impact and advances at your own pace. All training focuses on working joints and muscles wisely to promote life-long health and avoid damage.

Self defense

Goal: Learn a no-nonsense approach to basic self-defense:

  1. Simple techniques for different types of holds and grabs.
  2. Basics if you get taken to the ground.
  3. Attacks from behind.
  4. A flurry of strikes (can you do anything if someone is rapidly striking you non-stop?).
  5. THE BIG ONE (fear during an attack) – Levels of fear and some ways to control a flood of adrenaline.
  6. Defense against being falsely accused of being the attacker.
  7. What types of techniques NEVER to use for certain types of attacks.

Certificates of achievement having been awarded, for completing the classes in self-defense for the visually challenged.
It was taught by the young karate students to the adults.  The dojo has had a number of intergenerational classes where the younger karate students have taught Elders with visual challenges how to protect themselves.  The evaluations have been most positive on both sides of the age differences.
An important tenant at the dojo is that to those who are given much, much in return is expected.

Empowered S.E.L.F

Goal: Build confidence, sharpen awareness and reconnect with your natural instincts using the S.E.L.F. framework developed by CPS/BS instructor, Sara Do.

In this class we explore practical ways to stay safe, trust in your intuition, and make empowered choices in everyday situations.

No physical strength training or prior defense experience is required. Bring curiosity and an open mind, along with your courage to empower yourself through this experience.

Currently, sessions for this class have finished, but look forward to seeing this class again in September at the Abington Senior Center!
